Illustrative product stack

Zero Trust, SASE & Secure Remote Access Stack

Traditional VPNs can place users on a broad network, while cloud apps and remote workers require consistent access controls from many locations. A new access platform may help, but can duplicate existing Microsoft, firewall or browser controls.

This page shows possible product roles and alternatives, not a fixed bill of materials. Final selection depends on your existing infrastructure, risk profile, budget, licences, technical requirements and compatibility.

The business problem

Why this security area matters

Secure access architecture uses identity, application context and policy to grant appropriate access. SASE and SSE combine different network and security functions; the exact capabilities vary by supplier and licensing.

How organisations become exposed

Broad remote access, unmanaged devices, inconsistent MFA and unclear application ownership can create unnecessary access paths. Migrating access systems also affects user productivity and critical services.

Who should consider this stack?

Hybrid workforces, distributed sites, organisations modernising legacy VPN, businesses with private applications and teams reviewing remote access after cloud migration.

How to compare options

  • • Compatibility with existing infrastructure and licences.
  • • Security requirements, coverage and integration needs.
  • • Operational overhead, alert ownership and support requirements.
  • • Implementation effort and budget, confirmed in a tailored proposal.

How the stack works together

From visibility to continuous improvement

  1. 01Map users, devices, private applications, internet destinations and current VPN use.
  2. 02Define access policy by user, device posture and application requirement.
  3. 03Select an existing or target platform and validate identity and endpoint dependencies.
  4. 04Pilot limited user groups and applications before migration.
  5. 05Retain or retire old access paths only after testing and support planning.

Example architecture to assess

First assess existing VPN, identity, endpoint and cloud controls. A traditional VPN can remain suitable for some use cases. Where app-level access or converged policy is needed, evaluate one SASE/SSE/Zero Trust option; Check Point is the confirmed partner option. Microsoft access controls may complement, not automatically replace, it.

Alternatives and optional layers

Check Point, existing VPN, Microsoft Entra-related controls and other products may suit different access cases. Zscaler, Netskope, Palo Alto Prisma Access and Cisco Secure Access are not confirmed AOS offerings or partnerships.

How AOS can help

Advice, scope and delivery boundaries

AOS provides secure access and workspace security options including SASE, Zero Trust network access, private and internet access, enterprise browser and SaaS/browser protection. Product selection, identity integration, device requirements, licensing and migration support are confirmed in scope.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Is SASE the same as SSE?

The terms describe related but different scopes. SSE typically focuses on security services; SASE combines security with networking functions. Product definitions vary, so compare actual features.

Should we replace our VPN?

Not automatically. Review access needs, controls, user experience and application dependencies before deciding.

Does Zero Trust mean no trust at all?

It means access is evaluated using explicit policy and context rather than assuming broad trust based on network location. It is an architecture approach, not a single product.
