Email Security & Anti-Phishing Stack

Email remains a common route for credential theft, invoice fraud, impersonation and malware delivery. Native Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace protection can form a baseline, but configuration, licensing and business processes determine what is covered.

This page shows possible product roles and alternatives, not a fixed bill of materials. Final selection depends on your existing infrastructure, risk profile, budget, licences, technical requirements and compatibility.

The business problem

Why this security area matters

A practical email stack combines platform controls, domain authentication, account protection, reporting and verification procedures. Additional filtering may help where an assessed gap remains; overlapping gateways can add delivery complexity and should not be installed without need.

How organisations become exposed

Unreviewed forwarding rules, incomplete SPF/DKIM/DMARC, broad mailbox access, weak MFA and payment changes approved only by email can leave businesses exposed. Filters cannot stop every message or replace independent verification.

Who should consider this stack?

UK organisations using Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, particularly finance and professional services, organisations handling confidential documents, and teams facing invoice impersonation or mailbox compromise.

How to compare options

  • • Compatibility with existing infrastructure and licences.
  • • Security requirements, coverage and integration needs.
  • • Operational overhead, alert ownership and support requirements.
  • • Implementation effort and budget, confirmed in a tailored proposal.

How the stack works together

From visibility to continuous improvement

  1. 01Review mail platform, current licensing, mail flow, domains and current security policies.
  2. 02Improve domain authentication using SPF, DKIM and DMARC as appropriate.
  3. 03Select the existing platform controls or one additional protection layer for the identified gap.
  4. 04Protect accounts with MFA and review forwarding, admin access and sign-in activity.
  5. 05Make suspicious-message reporting and payment verification straightforward.

Example architecture to assess

Start with the controls already licensed in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and confirm their configuration. Add one supplementary email security platform only if the threat model and mail flow justify it. Check Point, Barracuda and TitanHQ are technology options; exact product availability and compatibility must be verified.

Alternatives and optional layers

Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Check Point email security, Barracuda Email Protection and TitanHQ products are potential alternatives or complementary options. Proofpoint, Mimecast and Abnormal Security are not verified AOS offerings and are not presented as currently available.

How AOS can help

Advice, scope and delivery boundaries

AOS provides email security controls layered over Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, including anti-phishing, business email compromise and malware protection. Domain changes, tenant access, coexistence, licence requirements and any ongoing management are scoped before delivery. Awareness training or phishing simulations are not assumed.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Does Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace already include email security?

Both provide security controls, with features depending on the service and licence. Review what is already active before choosing an additional layer.

Should we add two email security gateways?

Usually not without a specific documented need. Overlapping filtering can complicate mail flow and alert ownership.

Can SPF, DKIM and DMARC stop all spoofing?

They help authenticate mail claiming to come from your domains, but do not stop every impersonation or protect a compromised real account.
