Illustrative product stack

Data Protection & Loss Prevention Stack

Sensitive customer, employee, financial and intellectual-property information may be spread across mailboxes, endpoints, collaboration tools and cloud applications. Organisations often lack a reliable picture of where important data resides and who can share it.

This page shows possible product roles and alternatives, not a fixed bill of materials. Final selection depends on your existing infrastructure, risk profile, budget, licences, technical requirements and compatibility.

The business problem

Why this security area matters

Data protection joins classification, access controls, sharing rules, endpoint/email policies and audit visibility. It differs from backup: DLP aims to govern use and disclosure, while backup supports restoration.

How organisations become exposed

Broad permissions, uncontrolled external sharing, unmanaged endpoints and inconsistent retention can increase the chance of inappropriate disclosure. Controls must fit real workflows and should not imply regulatory compliance by themselves.

Who should consider this stack?

Professional services, healthcare, finance, technology and other organisations handling confidential, personal or commercially sensitive data across Microsoft 365 or cloud services.

How to compare options

  • • Compatibility with existing infrastructure and licences.
  • • Security requirements, coverage and integration needs.
  • • Operational overhead, alert ownership and support requirements.
  • • Implementation effort and budget, confirmed in a tailored proposal.

Inside the stack

How the stack works together

From visibility to continuous improvement

  1. 01Identify the information types and business processes that matter.
  2. 02Map data locations, sharing, access groups and existing licences.
  3. 03Set proportionate classification, access, sharing and retention policies.
  4. 04Deploy the appropriate controls in selected platforms and test with users.
  5. 05Review alerts and exceptions with data owners and privacy/legal advisers.

Example architecture to assess

For Microsoft-heavy organisations, assess Microsoft Purview against existing licences and data workflows first. Add a complementary SaaS/browser control only where it addresses a documented gap. DLP does not replace legal guidance or backup/recovery.

Alternatives and optional layers

Microsoft Purview is a current Microsoft ecosystem option. Check Point SaaS/browser protections and Barracuda data protection categories can be assessed for fit. Netskope, Forcepoint, Varonis and Proofpoint are not confirmed AOS offerings and are not presented as available.

How AOS can help

Advice, scope and delivery boundaries

AOS can discuss data protection through its confirmed cloud, email, endpoint, mobile, SaaS and browser security services. A dedicated DLP product, data discovery project or legal privacy assessment must be scoped and verified separately.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Is data loss prevention the same as backup?

No. DLP governs access and disclosure; backup is designed to retain copies for restoration. Both may be relevant but solve different problems.

Will DLP prevent every data leak?

No. Controls can reduce defined disclosure paths, but user actions, system limits and business workflows still matter.

Does adding a DLP tool make us GDPR compliant?

No. Tools can support controls, but compliance depends on broader legal, organisational and technical practices. Seek appropriate legal advice.
